  • Spent my weekends in Rockford, IL during high school. The man who built the motor for the Cyclone/Typhoon was a Rockford native. He had at least 20 of the damn things at his shop. I will never forget going to the dragstrip and watching his 1,100hp Cyclone run a 9.8 in the quarter mile, with all four wheels never hooking up throughout the run. The thing basically hydroplaned down the track. Little known to outsiders, but the transmission in the those trucks was so aggressive that it would basically eat itself in about 30k miles, even with normal driving. For me, that was their true downfall.

  • Good stuff Nolan and company. I'm 52. Remember all these trucks. For the money back in the 90s, a great deal, was the 90-94? Dodge Dakota shortbox 2 wheel drives with a 318. A little tweaking and it would smoke the unwary. Wanna drift? Happened daily. Fun!

  • I had a 2003 Dakota R/T in Viper blue. I sold it in 2006, because I had to drive to South Carolina to pick my future wife up from boot camp. I was to poor to afford the gas it would have required to drive the "race truck" on that round trip so I sold it and bought a sensible SUV. I regret selling it, every day. I did marry that girl, and we are still together so I guess it's not a complete shit show.

  • Lil red express truck was interesting, I thought the truck was sold with all the right kit except the intake and carb which was a 2 Barrel downdraft. This combo allowed dodge to meet tough CAFE standards and the 4Barrel was a sneaky Dealer installed tidbit supplied by Chrysler with a wink wink nudge nudge by the salesman to close the sale. Chrysler owned Lamborgini at the time and was the driving force behind the " Rambo Lambo " why the Italian military passed on it is a mystery.c

  • The best era for trucks was when all trucks had fully boxed ladder frames, a solid rear axel, could pull stumps out of the ground, and they didn't cost as much as a house. Sadly that era is gone and may never return. I'm all for people building fast, 2WD racing trucks or pickups built only for mall-terrain if that's what they want, but those are not the best eras for trucks.

  • The drop in performance during the early 70s was due to more than restrictive cats. Another major factor was dropping the compression ratio in the engines. Having a high c.r increased Nitrous oxide emissions (NOx). It was common for late 60s engines to have a c.r of 10-11:1 then dropped to like 8:1 in the 70s and 80s, these era of engines are often called ‘smoggers’. Ironically c.r is a critical factor in mileage, so the engines actually consumed more fuel during the smogger era relative to their predecessors.
