    • Absolutely not, being a farmer means you dont always guaranteed to have stable income, even when you have a good crop, if the market price is low, you will not have a massive profit, now imagine if these vehicle broke when the farmer is at his lowest point finacially, and cant afford to fix their vehicle in the dealership, I think Jhon Deer reasons behind this is utter bullshite and really just a corporate being greedy af

  • Well I think if the machine is so well made that it doesn’t break then John deer should make money on repairs. However they should drive to the customer and reset the programs. Or John deer can make their products break in 5 years and breaks a lot in 10-15 years like cars do. So that you have to buy new ones, which would be way worse, than just paying the repair fee. Products built to last can’t stay alive as a company if it’s a one and done sale. And then no one else needs anything. That’s how companies go out of business, and everyone’s favorite tractor will be gone for good

  • You probably don't know the whole story here if you are siding with John Deer. The heart of the problem is that John Deer, at any time can disable your equipment using the wireless software on board. Not only that, if the tractor breaks from something super minor, the software disables the tractor till they have a Technician clear the code, and the tractors are being designed now so that minor parts will need regular maintenance, and when the tractor is out of that maintenance interval, it is disabled till the part is replaced and the technician clears the cods. You might say, that suck, so don;t buy them. Well the truth is, the profit margins are sooooo thin in farming now that you need really high quality equipment to just run a farm at break even and John Deer is the only company that sells the equipment you can buy so that you can possibly even hope to make a profit. Labor and other equipment is way less effective for their price. So I will ask you, if you worked in an industry where you had to buy from the only player in the game, and that company actively sabotages your equipment so that the can suck money from your already profit stretched operation, would you side with them?

  • All JD needs to do is to have some kind of mobile groups that can go places and examine the repairs + reset errors in software. Charge something affordable for it and everyone's happy. Struggles during the ownership are a big downside when selecting what to purchase and it's in JD's best interest to fix it.

  • Right to repair also affects the heavy truck industry significantly. Though most tuners and talented shops can purchase access to the software, there are also versions of the software that have been hacked and are in widespread use today. The first manufacturer to break this trend of trying to monopolize their repairs and ability to maintain their product will take over the industry. I'm a business owner, my truck making me money is what is important. Their attempt to squirell more money out of me to maintain their product means I have no intention of using it.

  • Allowing the owner to fix a modern day tractor depends on what needs to be fixed. So they are right and wrong at the same time. A highly debatable topic with no clear conclusion.... It has to be looked at on a case by case basis, which makes it difficult to bring in a set of standard rules. So what will they do ? Come up with a blanket rule. That is exactly what they did. And yes, there are vested interests too as it earns them more money since part replacement and labor charges will be exorbitant (monopoly at work). It is a never ending discussion. But I'd say, if the machine is fairly reliable, it is good for the farmers to get the sophisticated machines repaired by the people who built it. It is just like my confidence in repairing my 2010 Camry while not wanting to touch the 2018 Merc. There are way too many things I can mess up which could cost double to repair eventually. Even a small broken plastic clamp will cost double or triple the price of that of a Camry.
