Why Everyone Wanted the Worst Car in the World

11 gen 2021

The Yugo is widely regarded as the worst car ever. It was poorly constructed, nowhere near reliable, and not so easy on the eyes. The Yugo was the butt of every joke and the junker in every garage. But for all its shortcomings, it sold like hotcakes when it arrived in the U.S. In this episode of Wheelhouse, Nolan tells the story of the Yugo's creation and makes the case for updating its reputation from worst car to huge success.

  • So I definitely got a big part of this story wrong: the assertion that Yugoslavia was part of the Soviet Union. This Is incorrect. In the West, this assumption can be traced back to Yugoslavia’s formation in 1943. During WWII, the Allies: The US, UK and USSR supported Yugoslavia’s fight against the fascist Axis occupation. We just kinda assumed they stayed allied with the USSR, but that’s not what happened. After the war, relations between Yugoslavia and the USSR fell apart, with Yugoslavia denouncing Stalinism completely and forming its own socialist government. Yugoslavia was in fact on the Western edge of the Iron Curtain, and maintained a delicate balancing act between Western and Eastern bloc countries. According to globalvoices.org “its independence from both the Eastern and the Western blocs was a key feature of its national identity.” I sincerely apologize for the error and for any offense it may have caused; and I will be more diligent and discerning in my research moving forward. Thanks for your time. -Nolan

    • @Denis Vadovič You are wrong also. But allow me to preface my explanation with a note that the vast majority of people in former Yugoslavia are not bothered by description of Yugoslavia as an Eastern European country. Technically geographically Slovenia belongs to Central Europe region, but the rest of former Yugoslavia is located on Balkans peninsula, which along with the Apennine and Iberian peninsula makes the geographic region called Southern Europe. Thus, former Yugoslavia excluding Slovenia and Vojvodina was located in Southern Europe, not Central.

    • Yep. Immediately after the WW2 pro-Russian sentiments were not very strong among the brass of CPY. And in 1948 came the Cominform resolution that called for Yugoslavs loyal to Russia to overthrow Tito. But Tito et al. dealt very ferociously with them. Going as far as establishing genuine concentration/re-eduction/hard labour camp at Goli Otok island for them. On a lighter note, do you know why improved Yugo had heaters on the "hatch" window? So your hands wouldn't freeze when you push it in the winter time. Side note, Yugo was named after the same trade wind as Scirocco. While the name of the wind is properly spelled "jugo", the name of the car was spelled with Y so it would sound more posh to foreign buyers. The fact that English speakers ended up instinctively pronouncing "jugo" correctly was an unintended consequence. Also the export to the US stopped because in 1992 there was a pause in production due to wars. Various parts were manufactured in various former Yugoslav republics. In Kragujevac, Serbia, Zastava's factory was doing only body panels and assembly.

    • @Walnuts and Beastiality maybe you can afford one, idk too much about how much they are worth in the USA, here in Europe you can find them for about €1100 which translates to about 1300 USD. Doesn't say a lot about US value, but I don't think they're too expensive out there either.

  • My notoriously frugal dad bought one of these brand new when they first came out. It was the only car he bought new. (He did splurge and buy the extended warranty.) After owning it for several years, he gave it to my younger sister, who has a heavy right foot. She was pulled over for speeding in it and the policeman let her go with a warning because, and I quote, "I'll get laughed out of the station if I wrote a ticket on a Yugo." :-) That aside, contrary to the video claiming it couldn't hardly go up hills, although it was slow, it was fast enough for the mild hills in Southern Ohio. As for build quality, especially the interior, it was horrible, but have you ever seen the contemporary Chevy Chevette?

To quote the instructor: “You got 3 guesses to tell me which vehicle drove away from the accident, and if anyone says the Yugo, I’m docking you 50 points for stupidity”. Harley-Davidson 1, Yugo 0.

If you don't belive me i literaly live in croatia And about zastava that was spelled corectly but the accent is over the first a and gets lower and faster by the end of the word If you want to spell croatian just speak as fast as possible and spell very literaly aka c is not k x and y do not exist and r is not arrr but the hard r. That should be some helpful advice to help you spell This aplies to russianand literaly any slav language.

Yeah, it's cheap, it was also reliable but just cheaply made. the 1.1 Liter 4 cylinder engine is just fine, and yes, it can get up hills... Its NOT SUPPOSED TO BE A LUXURY CAR. IT WAS THE CHEAPEST CAR EVER SOLD IN THE US. (when adjusted for inflation) - And thank you Nolan for correcting your error that Yugoslavia is part of the USSR - I am 1/2 Serb and something like that we take great offense to. I appreciate your correction. Thanks for reading guys, Yugo for life! - Sincerely, a half american, half serb, Yugo owner.

  • It was a success because it was dirt cheap and had a new car warranty, same as modern Kia garbage. You can’t swing a dead cat without hitting three HEINOUS Kia Souls, no one would ever buy one if they didn’t cost like 11 grand new with a 100,000 mile warranty. They’re disposable, for people who don’t give one fifth of a fuck about cars, they just need to get around as inexpensively and painlessly as possible so they can worry about things they do care about, and when said warranty runs out, trade in for a new one. Frankly, American OEMs should build shitty econoboxes that suck and don’t cost anything rather than ‘badge-engineering’ import trash. Look how well the Escorts, Chevettes, and K-cars did back when we built those turds.
