Fox Body Mustang - The Science Explained

The Fox Body Mustang set the template for all future Ford Mustangs. Today, Ford's V8 powered flagship pony car uses the same balance of fuel efficiency and power that the Foxbody set over 30 years ago. It was the muscle car that finally pulled Ford out of the hangover following the 70's oil crisis. All it took was space age computer technology, wind tunnels, and sticking a cat in the exhaust. With all of these things the Foxy body is Ford’s greatest underdog... underfox? UNDERFOX!

  • Good points about the Fox body Mustang but here's the real deal from someone old enough to remember. #1 : Light weight. The Fox Mustang was designed in the 1970's a time when Ford engineers had only 90-140 horsepower engines to work with so the key was to keep the weight as low as possible (2,900 pounds for a 1982 V8) to achieve any kind of acceleration, and of course aerodynamics as stated in the video. With a 302ci V8 in a light rear wheel drive platform it was just a matter of bumping the power a bit to get good performance. #2 : Affordable. Fox Mustangs were built on the Fox platform of course which means the cost was paid for by the sales of every Ford, Mercury and Lincoln that shared the platform. This is huge, today's Mustang is expensive because no other Ford vehicle uses the same platform. Fox Mustangs shared the same platform with everything from Fairmont wagons to Thunderbirds and MarkVII Lincolns so they were the best performance bargain available. A stock 1982 Mustang GT's quarter mile acceleration was right between a V8 928 Porsche and a 350ci Corvette, Not bad for a $9,000 Ford. #3 : Easy modification for performance enthusiasts. To this end Ford intentionally kept computers off the GT as long as possible. Meanwhile GM was using feedback computers on even their 4-barrel carburetor Camaros and Firebirds, just lifting the air cleaner lid off of an idling 1982 Camaro would confuse the feedback system and cause it to stumble and run rough. #4 : Factory Ford support. When the 1982 Mustang GT was launched so was Ford's renewed performance program called Ford Motorsports. Hard to believe today but Ford had been out of factory backed racing and performance parts development for over 10 years.

  • 4:36 "The 1986 Ford Mustang GT was the first ever fuel injected Mustang" I guess he forgot about the 1984 Mustang SVO with 2.3L intercooled turbo multi point EFI with a dual map regular/premium fuel switch. Or the 1983 Mustang GT Turbo. Then there were the throttle body EFI automatic transmission Mustangs... 9:57 The initial reaction to factory EFI modification was you couldn't because the 1986 GT used speed density EFI it wasn't until Ford switched to mass air systems with an air flow meter that modifications became popular.

  • Hey Donut, big fan here and an engineer myself. After watching half this video, I feel like I need to tell you guys you need to fact check your info you are sharing. First off, general motors designed and implemented sequential fuel injection first in the early 90s. Ford did not have the technology to do a sequential fuel injection until 1996. The EECV4 was not capable of handling eight independent injectors and timing eight independent cylinders for the correct amount of fuel as you guys stated in your video. The fuel injected 5.0L is a bank fire fuel injection system, meaning the left bank will fire all four injectors, then the right bank will fire all four injectors. For sequential fuel injection to work, you need high resolution tone rings on the cam and crank. You need to have references for each cylinder in order to meter fuel correctly to those cylinders. The 5.0L uses a 1 tooth ring for the camshaft (distributor) and no crankshaft sensor.

Love the channel and Jeremiah is the perfect Bones to James' Captain Kirk and Nolan's Spock but the Fox Body including the 5.0 are exceptionally UGLY!!! 1979-93 Mustangs are the ugliest in the lineup. 2nd Gens not being too far off. But thanks again for a wonderfully well explained in depth video. Keep doing you.

I got a damn steal on it the interior is 9/10 with a slight rip in the stitching on the leather my dash isn't cracked either. Only problem the car had was the ecu being fried 150 dollars later and a charged battery she fired right up 1st try. It sat 3 years before it had been worked on. I have major plans for the car I'm going to get it repainted even though the fenders just need paint its factory color is medium cabernet. I cant wait to get it back to the factory look. I feel close but far from done.

If they were selling the '69 mustang body in 1974 with a weak 70's engine, it might still be OK. At least they would have LOOKED cool.
