Big thanks to Pupil-Labs! Eye-Tracking Glasses here:
Almost everyone watching our channel has fantasized about being a pro driver. Many of us wonder, what separates someone who enjoys carving the canyons from a professional who does this type of thing for a living? Obviously, they've trained their whole lives, and have a degree of natural aptitude. But once they're in the car, what is the professional doing that an amateur just can't keep up with?

  • 2 ITworlds ads followed by a donut sponsored ad is a tad bit much. Please pick 1 or the other. Not that you care but if I see those yellow bars after a sponsored ad I don't care how good the video is I'm out.

  • This is all bullshit. You started with a premise. Compare real data between you and a pro driver and the difference is the answer to why a pro driver is what you are not. Seems simple. Logical. Except most of this video is dressing up what is simply skill acquired with practice as something technical. Do you honestly and truely think a racing driver taught himself to look further down the track? Where your eyes point is the most natural physical movement I can think of aside from breathing. No. You learn how to race and you memorize your lap and your brains looks for markers and your eyes follow. They don't follow you. Your brain doesn't follow it. That reminds me of when my father would try to teach me to drive and give me a hundred instructions which included things like don't look at the gear lever. The problem is I don't know how to drive so I don't know where the fuck it is. It's not programmed in my muscle memory yet. I didn't say that. He just aborted the mission every time. I taught myself how to drive and now drive for a living. Confirming every suspicion I ever had about it. That the skill was not extraordinary and that it was mostly just skill, which every normal u disabled adult is expected to possess. You know that thing you acquire as a function of time multiplied by attention. Perhaps of a few thousands or tens of thousands of hours to become a master. Don't quote me ad lib but I definitely remember an interview with Lewis fucking Hamilton about how all that driver coaching is horse shit. I'm not saying I'm a racing driver but I know that this aspect of skill development is secondary to the absolutely simple equation of time and attention. And also the inescapapable and unfortunate yet real function of how early on you learned it during your brains debelopement. Which is why I will never be a racing deiver. And I have a hypothesis that the single greatest factor in the subject of public road safety is attention. As for racing, well let the experts speak. Not the telemetry. They have spoken you know. Go find out and then come back and correct me.

  • I already do most of these. though admittedly at a much lower speed. I had a fit though when you switched to the camera. Do normal people seriously look this close to the car? look down the road. look at upcoming obstactles. Do you realize how fast you're going? how slow your reaction time is. Everything you can see in front of you should be part of your planning. there should be no surprises on the road. How do people survive not looking down the road?

  • Biggest factor here is simply vehicle and track knowledge. Mike knows the car and track, you don't. Most of your extra movement comes from lack of vehicle and track knowledge. This doesn't negate the need for smooth - bike, car, boat doesn't matter, smooth is paramount.

  • You also have to remember that Mike is way more comfortable with the car than Jeremiah. When you know the car, looking one step ahead to the exit of the corner before entering it becomes easier. Also the smooth steering inputs are also due to being comfortable with the car. If you don't know what the car's going to do, its hard to be smooth.

  • Ok.... this is hella confusing You’ve driven fast cars, the fastest thing I’ve ever sat in is my dads company Volvo V60 with the base engine. But I do both those things, maybe not to the extend and quality of the professional driver but way better than you do, especially the eye movement (something I noticed in the thumbnail) Both of the differences you’ve talked about, we’ve been taught in driving school (Germany) Where to look while driving is drilled into your mind, and it’s actually something that caused a friend of mine to fail his physical And what you called “string theory” was explained in a much dryer way to us

  • 6sec difference considering it was your first time in that circuit and with that car and also assuming the “pro” racer knows that track like the palm of his hand and is more used to that car is not bad at all. The pro racer is bad or you are better than you think.

  • I'd like to add one more rule, but before I do it, let me ask you: what do you do with your left foot? Do you use it just for walking? What a waste... Make a use of it, and if you have an automatic then brake with left, accelerate with right. If manual: left foot clutch and corner braking, right for accelerating and sand-still brake. That's a HUGE improvement, especially for front wheel drives and for AWD! Try it at snow, rain, whatever. See how car balances itself. SO, rule #4: engage left foot to work! :D

  • How about trail braking? Braking in a straight line can only get you up to some level. Braking and accelerating in relation to your steering inputs and corner position can and will make you much faster. Driver61 has a great video about it.
