As car people, none of us want to be in a crash, but if it were to happen to you, would you be ready? in the this video we take an in depth look into the physics of a crash and the engineering that has gone in to keeping us all safe. the systems are immensely complex and well researched, from crumple zones, to air bag timing, to seat belt tensioners everything that works together to minimize injury in a crash has been developed over decades. Becky Mueller, Senior Research Engineer from the IIHS joins us to explain how crashes happen, show safety equipment works, and how you can stay safest in a crash.

  • So seatbelt and stuff, that's all good. But for driving position, would a normal, more comfortable position with about 30 deg of angle in your arms in respect to wheel be better or worse compared to a more racing oriented seating position where your arms are closer to 90 deg of angle? I have a 60-70 deg angle in my speed3 so I was just wondering, mathematically, which one would be safer?

  • I've been in so many accidents in my life that I've trained my self to go limp in order to save myself if I can. Last one I was in my wife suffered bruises and a fracture from the seat belt but all I walked away with was some stitches from my hand hitting the windshield. Also had a crash in a 90 ford Taurus at 75mph had I not been wearing my seat belt I would have been a statistic

  • 1. Be predictable Signal properly, fucking pay attention to others and road conditions, don't drive erratically. If it's snowing, raining, foggy or congested slow down and keep distance. 2. Don't be intoxicated You're dumber and slower 3. Keep your distance So you can see, react, brake or evade. I fucking hate tailgating. But of course I sometimes do it when someone goes 30 in a 45. Again don't do that, be predictable. 4. Wear your seatbelt Cars are trying to protect a body shaped object that stays in a car seat not a projectile. My dad survived a crash and rollover without one with a Plymouth Duster. He said he was lucky. Always told me cars are better now and to wear it. 5. Don't have dangerous items in the cabin that could become projectiles in a crash or rollover. And strap your shit down in your trailer or truck bed. 6. Have clear visibility Working lights that are on, clean windows that don't fog up or are covered in ice so you can see the road and others can see you. 7. Assume everyone else is distracted, drunk, in a hurry and retarded. This also goes for overly courteous drivers. I once had a guy wave me through to the other side of the road. I ignored him and looked to make sure it was safe, only to see a car come flying by that would have t-boned me if I just trusted him. Also If you're cruising in a lane on the highway and someone comes speeding up, assume they'll probably fly by and erratically change lanes, just stay how you were unless they ride your ass. 8. Maintain your vehicle. Keep your brakes in good condition, the best tires you can afford with good tread and not dry rotted. Replace your lights when they go out. Don't drive on E all the time prepare for getting stuck in Winter or a flat tire on the side of the road. Or get AAA. This also goes for inspection, registration or license. I don't want a cop interested in my car because I'm out of date for some stupid reason. 9. If you can have a co-pilot for navigation, food, and cell phone communication so you don't drop your burger while typing your mom's address in and die. BONUS. Don't drive. Statistically it's one of the more dangerous things you can do everyday. You're much safer walking or flying to your destination. But fuck that driving is fun with the right car and road. And lastly don't drive like it's your last hotlop on the Nurburgring before retirement. Buy a helmet, get some driving lessons, and check out a drag strip, track day, or drift event. Or play Forza. ...others probably
