  • Man, huge SUIVs are the worst. I drive a sedan. Nothing compact - a 2018 Honda Clarity Plug-in. Trying to turn out of an intersection, pull out of a parking spot, or even just see traffic lights and signs is harder when there's a land yacht in the way. And, they barely fit in parking spots anymore, so these suburban tanks make it harder to navigate around parking lots, too. I've seen so many recent Suburbans (and big-ass trucks, for that matter) double parking because they just don't fit in parallel parking spots anymore. Even worse, I've seen a few start taking to quad parking because they're both too wide and too long for spots. Quad parking isn't just for the jerk who just got their $200k supercar detailed - now it's for the land yacht too.

  • This is the problem with American manufacturers and Americans who buy larger than needed vehicles. They buy them when gas prices are low and bitches about feeding their family when prices go high. It's as if they didn't live through high gas prices before and it'll never happen again.

Can't really stand the idea of using it up. Those pickup's would haul 99% of anything hauled by the "obscene" pickup's on the road today. I now have the last "standard" cab Toyota Tacoma made of reasonable size. A 2011. Its a clumsy behemoth compared to what we used to buy but tiny compared to what is being offered now.

  • Bigger sucks Poor handling More aero drag lame Worse acceleration per unit of engine power Tip over more easily Poor center of gravity Poor weight distribution Poor braking performance Increase mass Lower Fuel Economy High fuel consumption Higher operating costs Higher insurances costs Higher tire costs More brake wear Poor neuro-cognitive sense of speed, less fun at lower speeds ((see your recent video, or the adage riding a slow bike fast more fun that riding a fast bike slow)) // More costs & less fun Almost always just 1 person, the driver Waste & excess Does not fit in garages in houses made in the 1980s & previously when vehicles were much smaller, less long etc Higher emissions or in an electric EV lower efficiency or fewer miles per kWh or higher energy consumption

  • He's absolutely right about the size/mpg loophole. But there are 2 other reasons that go hand in hand in hand...?...with that. 1. The cost of insurance. It's more expensive to insure a small car (commuter) for 4 reasons which I was told this my my insurance agent who's the regional manger A) People do Not take care of those small cars since they're cheap, B) They don't repair them after an accident because they are so cheap and fewer used parts are available like body panels, interior parts etc.... C) They don't drive as defensively, so they get in more accidents and finally D) The injuries in small cars are more extensive; meaning more medical cost. 2. Larger cars are considered more of a luxury so they're more expensive, ergo are driven in a more safer manner. A) Since they're larger & heavier, they don't handle as well as a sports car so they are beaten on less. B) They're better maintained and are usually repaired after an accident. C) There are more used parts available in much better condition since the cars were taken care of and were mainly junked for reason's other than accidents. D) Medical cost/person are lower because of the size & more standard safety equipment. Again, it all boils down to profits; like he stated. The Only thing automakers see is $$$. Nobody in their right mind would pay an extra $4K for leather interior on their Fiesta but won't blink an eye for that on their Excursion; which they can upcharge even more to $6K for it. The lack of common sense in today's buyers is little to non-existent. Most people today are easily brainwashed and spoon fed the advertisers pablum so easily that it's a reflection of today's society: "They said it, so I Have to believe it" mentality without even checking it out for themselves.

  • the main reason why cars are getting bigger is safety. and while some companies might focus on emissions, not every country's emissions regulations are the same so designing a car (the car's body) specifically to fit a country's emissions laws is a bit too expensive. another reason why cars are getting bigger is cuz with all the safety tech, there still has to be room left for styling and practicality. countries have various regulations for road legal cars, the US in particular is known for their strict and often unnecessary laws. causing a perfectly fine European exotic to be fitted with ugly plastic cones

  • But thats how the car industry works. A company will launch a new model to fit a certain category. That model slowly increases in specs/size. But in the meantime, the company launches a new model almost same specs/size as the original. Example: BMW 3 Series launched 1976. It slowly grew in size to where it was no longer the ideal, cute and compact car it once was. So BMW brought out the 1 Series which was almost same size as original. Toyota Corolla: nice neat small car launched 1967, became fwd early 80's but still smallish. But grew in size to the point where Toyota brought out the Yaris, almost same size as 80's Corolla.

  • Thank you for asking for a small truck! I've been pounding the table for years about this. If you live in the city but still need (or want) a truck, there's not much out there. Most undergrounds can't fit trucks these days. Even Tacoma's are too big for many of them in any practical way. Put and Ranger in the dryer and lemme at it! There's absolutely a major market out there for a badass truck that happens to be small.
