This week on Money Pit, the miata’s floppy body will be stiffened up with a barrage of chassis bracing components. We’ll take a few LASER measurements before and after to see if we’ve stiffened the car up or just lightened our wallet.

  • Door bars definitely make a good difference,; I went from an S special with half cage to V special, with the shocks from the S special, with just a brace/ style bar at the rear and there's far more scuttle shake on the S special.

  • When doing torsional you'll really want to replace the coil overs with a ridged beam at ride height so that suspension articulation is minimized as much as possible. Bushings and even the control arms in the suspension will still give some in the measurement as well, but that's about as good as it gets in the garage. Also that might only be a quarter inch of movement but that's the front suspension twisting a quarter inch away from the rear suspension, aka the front tires are now twisted a measurable amount from the rear and this is just static loading. Imagine over 2g in vertical force when you're braking on corner entry and one of your front tires hits a bump... think about all those alignment numbers and designed suspension kinematics that are down to the thousandth of an inch now just being thrown a quarter of an inch around.

  • There is also an X-brace from Flying Miata that ties the 2 chassis rails together. That might be a good addition. Significant to handling is Shock tower braces...front and rear... that help maintain the proper tire camber when going around corners. Consistent handling is about keeping the two outside tire contact patches as flat as possible on the ground. The inside rear is good for traction out of the corner but the camber on the inside front tire...on a rear wheel drive car...is almost meaningless. Check out a still of an F1 car going around a corner sometime.

  • Love your guys channel. The reason why your basic ramp test didn't work is because you didn't really change the load on the chassis (except change the weight distribution on the wheels slightly and shifted the C.G. rear a bit). A better test woulda been to go over a set of bumps at a constant speed and by camera track max deflection. Your 2nd approach worked much better because you're actually significantly changing the load on the chassis, so you got a more conclusive result.

  • I can’t get my head around how those frame rails (sheet aluminium that’s been bent into a u) adds any structural rigidity when they are only tacked onto the outside of the chassis by just a few very small fasteners. They are attached onto the chassis... but not part of the chassis. It’s like sticking on a car door sill plate and then saying yeah I’ve stiffened the sill
