Have you ever wondered why Lewis Hamilton complains about tires after 50 miles while your tires can do over 50,000? How can road tires and F1 tires be so different? In this episode we dive into the the high stresses an F1 tire needs to withstand, the difference in the chemical composition of tires, and the incredibly precise engineering that goes into one of Formula 1's most controversial subjects, tire failure. If you like the smell of burnt rubber in the morning, this video is for you!

Donut Media is at the center of digital media for the next generation of automotive and motorsports enthusiasts. We are drivers, drifters, and car enthusiasts who love to tell stories.
one thing i dont understand on formula 1 is: why nobody never build a car that all wheels can spin? (like a 4x4 offroad car)
I love the content but hate it bc I come on ITworlds just to watch one video which is been planning to watch then I see this and need t watch it
50 miles ?? i dont think its that low
6:14 felt that😔
but its also to keep the drivers driving more proper as any mistakes will lessen the tire life and need a pit stop. not just for the super grip, older f1 tires in more powerful cars lasted longer. now its standardized so everyone has to use the same tires increasing the skill gap and making racing much more close. drivers have to be more careful about how much they push so they dont wear tires out too quickly , same thing about regulations about fuel tank sized and no refuelling during the race.
8:18 "formula 1 tyres wear much faster than your mom's tyres"
Dude! I think pit stops are my favourite thing about F1! There are so many chances to absolutely screw it up. I also feel more of a kinship with those people, over the drivers. Drivers live a life I will never understand, whereas the pit crew? I mean, they probably have mortgages...
Your southern's hanging out.
It took him seventeen minutes to say "the tires last 50 miles because the FIA wanted pit stops to be more integral to a race and therefore make the races more dramatic."
I loved the off record ad.
2.2 Pounds (lb) = 1 Kilogram (Kg), 1 Mile = 1.6 Km , for F to C you need this formula : (32°F − 32) × 5/9 = 0°C , so 280 MPH = 448 KPH, 162 MPH = 259 KPH , 300F = 149C, 2200 = 1000 Kg, 180 mph = 288kph, 2800lb = 1273 Kg, 150 Miles = 240 Km, 50 miles = 80Km, 120F = 49C, 200F = 93C, 240F = 116C, 230F = 110C, 285F = 141C, Most conversions should be here in order did not list repeats all figures rounded to nearest whole number. If I missed one the formulas are there.
Any one ever done 90k miles or 145km on a set of tires unless ur a truck driver?
It’s is not wonder why F1 is quickly killing the pierreli brand’s pr. Designing a tire to fail is stupid 😂🙏😔
Never been a fan of watching the worlds best drivers conserve fuel and look after their tyres
That is the dumbest reason to have tires that wear out extremely quickly. I get it if there is a performance trade-off that teams can choose between, but to force it so there are more pit stops because you think that's what fans want to see is ludicrous.
17 minutes to explain why tires don’t last
Was that an inter-dimensional cable ad from Rick and Morty? Sounded like it.
Fruckers stole my tires, can't have poop in detroit
If soft tires outlasted hard tires why would anyone ever run hard tires hence the rules
Anyone ever tell you that you resemble ayrton senna?
G R O O V Y
Checo Perez: Tyre Dregra...what?
Formula Tyre
More DTM, JGTC, BTCC, and WRC content please? F1 more than anyone needs some tire degradation, the strategy really helps keep the teams on their toes and if Mercedes stubbs theirs on tires or a pitstop then anyone can win! There needs to be abit more freedom in overall car designs with the budget cap though, to reward sweat and ingenuity over big money.
Change of rules proposal: No compulsory tire change. Only one compound per race, guaranteed to last at least 125% of the race. Pit stops allowed, but only four mechanics in a perimeter five meters arround the car.
My moms car haven't even been needing new tires since 2013 and they are still perfect in winter
Wait how did redbull survive the drive across america with only two pitstop
Dude...I have to admit. That was the most intuitive post I’ve seen on Dounut. Good job!!!
Let me cut it short they go fast they don’t last long they go slow like normal car last very long your welcome
That where you're wrong. My mom has a Monte Carlo
Consumer tires for cars are not 1.25" or 30mm thick.
I see the FIAs point kind of. They lost me many years ago, as F1 back then was: 20+ cars running 50 laps in exactly the same order as they startet ":-) But exploding tires, I dont know... Its also also ecological a cracy thing to say: We spend billions to make the worst and most waistfull race tire you could think off, and nobody will profit from that, because that tecnology is not transferable to anthing else.
Copse corner isn’t pronounced like corpse
Discount James Franco is a great presenter.
these ads are gold every time
Sports industry is all one big elaborate marketing platform for Sponsors.
How bout you leave my mom out of this
It would be nice to add the metric system on the video so people from other places can understand its content
um so the tv lies when it shows the f1 cars cornering at higher than 5 gs damn:(
More shit on the pile of stink
I think the FIA should loosen their restrictions on tires
The number of time you mocked my mom....I'm still not offended.
Dude, I really like ur content... I'm usually lazy to comment or like, but u hv a way of making me hv the energy to at least do 1of those... Keep feeding me that dope content....
Mom said you left your jacket in her van. My little brother is wearing it now. Thanks Bro !! Love the content of ALL THE DONUT VIDEOS!!
How about NASCAR tires
Black tires matter
make 6 mm thread tires win every race I'll be waiting my share of the prize in the mail
just came back to this video because i didnt leave a hate comment on jeremiah, I still hate him, love the others tho.......but not you jeremiah, not the slightest
this sponsor is weird, it ckinda sounds like it promotes reckless driving
"Just let them race" and let us watch more boring Hamilton winning.
the sponsor was the best part of the video
So 50.9 miles is the limit?
The paid promotion bit felt like I was watching interdimensional cable or some shit I loved it
"Breaking Grip" lol
Braking, not breaking.
if you want a race ALL about the driver and the car watch NASCAR F1 is about everything that goes into the car including the pit team it's not just about the Best drivers it's about the BEST teams.
Whoever does the graphics and animations deserves a raise.
Did you just call it "Corpse Corner"? :O
Hey! shouldn't it be "degradation" and not "degredation" at 7:38 , also shouldn't it be "braking force" and not breaking force at 3:29 and 3:38 ?
Your girl cannot be stolen by the next guy unless SHE WANTS TO!!! 😂😂😂
The fruit fly in my house lives longer
In glad my mom doesn’t drive a van, i would be worried
Love the video, on the next one please also use not retard units of measurements, not just donuts/bald eagle.
Just let 'em RACE!
They change the tires more often to create that mix of place change otherwise by the end of the race you’ll have large gaps by the end
30mm?!?!?!?? Average normal tyre is like 7-8mm no?!
Ok ITworlds I watched it
I didn’t know they renamed Copse to Corpse
I never knew about the tire strategy in F1!
Ya moms tires suck
F1 tyres can lost linger than 50 miles, quite a bit more I reckon
ok that sponsor killed my sub to you and wont ever watch.. fighting dui tickets.. good luck meatheads
"F1 tyres don't actually produce less grip" Games: lmao no
They have tires like that on porpoise.
pit strategy makes races massively exciting. especially when it comes to circuits like monaco, where passing is almost impossible, without pitstops the racing would be dull
The final point about just letting them race would be good if there weren't essentially two classes of f1 team at the moment. If all the teams could compete with one another, tires would be less of a problem. However, forcing strategic putting allows for a bit more competition. 2022 regs hopefully will rectify the competitiveness issue
The tires aren’t the only contact with the ground on my car, the muffler also is touching the ground
this is why i hate regulations and regulatory agencies.
I don't actually like F1 competition. And after knowing this... wow, I really don't like F1 competition. Note: i don't mean that I don't like F1 cars, I love F1 cars. I just don't like the pitstop and team order and other strategy imposed.
GTA Online: Why Formula tires last only 4.6 miles...
The problem with tire predictability is that the teams will then pour time into shaping the car to suit the tires and those that can’t do it, will lose out.
Short answer, money
Change your name to Judge Tread.
This & Money Pit ARE Donut media. Good stuff always.
the ad looks like a scuffed music video
So here's why there's no up to speed.. (129) car/truck videos (make model and sub model) videos. (7) oem perf. division videos. (7) aftermarket perf. divisions. (2) racing (F1, group b) videos. (2) race car drivers (Petty, Miles). (1) race track, the ring. (3) engines Hemi,LS,Cummins. (3) motorcycles. (2) semi trucks. 4 misc eps. Santa sleigh, quattro system, foxbodys, john deere tractors. (2) deleted eps. and a Redux episode of the RX-7.. ⚡⚡⚡ and now there out of ideas maybe?
What happened to Up To Speed
Nice one
Hey donutmedia👋🏽 maybe put the Celsius and the kilo’s also in the video, from the Netherlands 🇳🇱
I think it would be a good idea if they made the tires lose grip at the end of their life instead of failing.
'If they would just let them race." So make it Nascar then? It would be interesting comparing the tires of F1, Indy, Le mans and Nascar together.
TLDR: FIA is killing F1, 1 regulation at a time.
Krabby patty formula but with tires..
Why? Because planned pit stops were implemented instead of simply running a whole race. Planned pits are nothing more than a vestige of someone looking for an advantage... they're unnecessary.
Lmao, what's a Farenheit?
they may not race during pitstops but one wrong pitstop can be the reason of loosing a race. Strategy is the name of the game
I stopped watching F1 ages ago. Watching cars pit stop (quickly, granted), but pit anyway and having the race winner determined by tire strategy kind of sucks. So I'll just watch Formula E and Stadium Super Truck racing, thank you.
My mom hates you now. Congrats
It's great to hear someone talking about Pirelli drawing the shortest draw. When other companies had the monopoly on tyres, like Goodyear in the '90s, they just put out the best tyres they could. Or, at the very least, a good tyre (like when they were forced to make grooved tyres). When Pirelli got the contract, they were forced to accept absurd rules, created by the FIA with no real need. Like "make the tire last only X laps! it will be more fun!" or "hey, next year we are increasing downforce and power, so you have to provide a new tire, that will degrade in X laps. But with no testing at all! It would be costly. And we want this to be a surprise for everyone! This will surely increase the spectacle with no risk at all!" (Silverstone 2013). Frankly, i'm surprised Pirelli is still in F1. Being in F1 has only damaged their reputation, and (largely) not by their fault.
All I'm going to say is I'm impressed because ive been working in a tire factory building tires for 4 years now and I was learning new things. But the butyl rubber is the very insode of the tire as its the only kind of rubber that holds air. Its not actually in the tread
